Book Review

“It’s real, Six. You can’t get mad at a real ending. Some of them are ugly. It’s the fake happily ever afters that should piss you off.”

Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…
That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

“You don’t deserve words, Sky. You deserve actions.”

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

Review

Before diving into the review, it is not a hopeless novel. The grace with which justification is done to the title is absolutely amazing. As I started with the novel, I fell in love with the arrangement and the solace Sky and Six had. It made me think about all those times when I and my best friend spent hours discussing how cool it would be if we could live across and communicate through the windows.
(Unpopular opinion: I love how Sky was technologically uneducated.)

“Sometimes you have to choose between a bunch of wrong choices and no right ones. You just have to choose which wrong choices feels the least wrong.”

Commenting upon Holder now. His entrance is dark and intimidating, not only for Sky but for the readers as well. What particularly intrigued me was his tattoo, ‘ Hopeless’. For some reason, I wanted a phenomenal explanation to it and Hoover does absolute justice to the expectations. Holder’s temperamental attitude was a little off-putting but then he did have his reasons (and he does make it up in the latter part by being extra cheesy)

“Just because you blocked the memory of me out of your mind doesn’t mean you blocked the memory of me out of your heart”

The reason I read this was that obviously, it’s by Colleen Hoover. Frankly, I’d read her grocery lists (not me randomly quoting fios). She’s known for swooning you off your feet as you read her romances and then hit you with cliffhangers. And that’s exactly what she does here too. Everything was good. Everyone was flying off their feet. Cloud 9 and then bammmmm- the world turns upside down. A few of the twists you can see coming, but one threw me off entirely. It was hella wondrous. I admire how Holder stands with Sky through it all but it disappoints me that six isn’t there. I needed more Six-Sky scenes. And I wanted more back story on Les. I felt there is so much more to her that was hidden.

Overall, I enjoyed this story! It was a pretty easy read but does hold a lot of dark elements to it that can make you feel sick to your stomach. It’s not that high on my Colleen Hoover scale but on the whole, it is a pretty decent book
